Capturing the Unexpected: A Close Encounter with Urban Wildlife

Equatorial Spitting Cobra | Singapore

Embrace the unexpected in wildlife photography! The old saying, "You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take," is especially true in capturing nature’s spontaneous moments. Just this week, an ordinary morning turned extraordinary for me. Armed with my camera, I ventured out early, scoring images of a white-bellied sea eagle and an otter fishing. Yet, the real highlight awaited near home.

Cycling through a local park, I stumbled upon a murder of crows forming a semi-circle, intensely focused on something hidden in the grass. Curiosity piqued, I approached cautiously and discovered they were eyeing a snake. The crows were animated, cawing and hopping to fend off this unexpected visitor. I spent the next 20 minutes maneuvering for a clear shot, capturing the snake amid the underbrush.

The snake, a Black-Spitting Cobra or Equatorial-spitting cobra, added a thrill to the encounter. It's fascinating (and alarming!) to find such wildlife thriving in a bustling city of over 5.8 million people. These images testify to the surprises that await when you keep your lens ready. Join me in exploring the unseen corners of urban jungles through my latest captures.
